Who’s laughing now, doubters? Cloud makers rake in £75bn in sales

8 Jan 2016 at 06:04, Drew Cullen

Global cloud revenues jumped 28 per cent year-on-year to reach $110bn (£75bn) in the 12 months to September 2015.

Totting up the numbers is Synergy Research, which tracks vendor revenues in six cloud services and infrastructure areas. These are: Public IaaS/PaaS, Private and Hybrid, SaaS, UCaaS, Public Cloud, Private Cloud.

As we always say when we write up Synergy numbers, this analyst firm is much more parsimonious than IDC and Gartner in dishing out the stats. We don’t get to see vendor share, for example – Synergy merely says Cisco, HPE, Amazon/AWS, Microsoft, IBM and Salesforce are market leaders.

But we do learn that infrastructure hardware and software soaked up $60bn (£41bn), with spend on private clouds accounting for more than half that total, although public cloud revs are growing faster.

Cloud service providers parlayed their infrastructure capital spending in the 12 months to September 2015 to generate $20bn (£13bn) in revenues from IaaS, PaaS, private & hybrid services and another $27bn (£18bn) from software-as-a-service (SaaS). This investment also underpins supporting internet services such as search, social networking, email and eCommerce. ®
